It's been two weeks since we've moved all of our stuff into the new place in Weston-Super-Mare and we're now pretty settled. Last weekend we cleaned the old flat and handed over the keys, so we are officially fully and only in our new flat.
We still have stuff to do (like hang pictures) and some rooms have empty gaps where we will place new furniture that we have yet to buy, but everything we do have is pretty much unpacked.
We ended up not taking a lot of photos of the moving process. I've already posted the pictures of the flat right when we got the keys, but we mostly shot videos, which Mark has edited down.
This first half of the video contains some highlights from the packing process (starting with a demonstration of my "whittling down" method and the first time we saw the flat after getting the keys (so the second time we had seen the place). The second half was taken on the main moving in day and tries to give you that "you are there" feeling. (By the way, for those who haven't seen him before, that's Mark's Dad helping us out on the main moving day).
We ended up doing a total of 3 trips with the big van we rented and 3 trips with Noddy (our Honda CR-V). Mark and I had a bet about how many trips we would have to make with the van - we were both way off (Mark said 7, I said 5), but not surprisingly, if you add up the total number of trips we had to make with both van and car, it's bang in the middle of our two guesses.
So far after two weeks, some things we have learned:
-yes, as Jenny predicted, the kitchen sink is a bit splashy, but manageable
-we love the dishwasher (it's been so long I had forgotten how great they are)
-the neighbors are more noticeable and bit louder than the ones we had before (and we have more of them now), but the loud music we heard the first night we moved in hasn't been repeated, so we think that was a party and not a regular occurrence...and we've already started to tune out the other normal noises
-Poppadoms is an Indian food place that does delivery and it is very good
-having separate bathrooms is fantastic, especially in the mornings when we're both leaving for work at about the same time
-we seem to own a lot of books
-we can walk to the train station in 10 minutes
-we can walk to the sea front in about five minutes
So far, so good!

thank you soooooo much for the update......all looks great...looking forward to visitng...
LOVE the video -- nice editing, Mark...enjoyed the high-speed (time lapse?) moving-in portion. looked like a lot of work! was there stairs or elevator??
i think you have as many plastic bags as you do books! books are much heavier.
5 minutes to sea-front. not fair!
No elevator, just stairs - in both places. But it's just one flight, so not so bad. And particularly not bad for me, since Mark and his dad did all the heavy and awkward stuff!
Amazingly most of the plastic bags didn't make it - we kept them long enough to see if any would be useful in the move and then somehow I managed to let most of them go and we took them to recycling...
Things I learned:
-Mark is indeed a good editor.
-You have all Ikea or Ikea-style furniture
-Where the dishwasher is
-All your views are GREAT!
Question:
-Do you guys only sneeze in that main junction area or in other parts of the flat as well?
Things of which I am reminded:
Moving always seems like an exciting adventure, but it is a LOT of work... most of it tedious and back-ache inducing...
I'm glad you are mostly settled. I am looking forward to seeing the "after" video!
We try to keep all the sneezes in the entry way - sometimes the sneeze comes so fast we just can't make it, so we end up sneezing elsewhere, but we try to avoid it whenever possible.
I can only think of two pieces of furniture that we own that aren't from IKEA - our mattress which is from some other bed store, and the table that the TV sits on, which Mark made and which has been with us pretty much from the beginning, since he made it when we were living in the annex of his mum's place.
A lot of our non-furniture things are IKEA, too - our pots, some knives, some wine glasses, some sheets, etc.
And you can guess where we're probably going to buy the other bits of furniture that we need to fill in the flat! We're just lazy, lazy people who don't want to spend loads of money...
I totally agree with your thought about moving - I was so excited beforehand with the looking for places and then the idea of moving when we decided on this place...but the reality is such a big pain with the packing and the schlepping and the unpacking and the address changing and the settling and the figuring things out...but we're glad we did it.
I shudder to think about the next move, though, since it's likely that we'll have even more furniture, and it's likely that it will be transatlantic...ugh.
"lazy, lazy people who don't want to spend loads of money"
That pretty much describes most Americans' attitude toward the economy...
Move to Clemson, and we'll help you with the unpacking!! (John can carry stuff, and Twohy will probably be able to move to the main junction of the house to sneeze by then!) :)
Nice work - all the way around! Packing.. discarding.. schlepping.. sneezing.. editing.
Mark's Dad gets my vote for Dad Of The Year!
