Hornucopia 2009

Ok, here is the much-requested blog post, so there is easier discussion about activities and food. I'll keep the list of activities over on the right and add one for food, just to keep it simple. If you want anything added to the list, then comment on this post and I'll add it to the list on the right.

Here are the (constructive) comments that we have had so far:

From Mom:
we were thinking of everyone on their own for breakfast (cereal, toast, juice and cream chipped beef once)....

for sunday we r thinking about our holiday meal....mimi does the turkey and gravy ......julie and tony do sweet potatoes......jessica is doing dressing (can i bake the corn bread ahead of time and freeze ???) and mark can play the music - flutes or does he have a favorite food to prepare...pa is to do pie(s)........jenny mashed potatoes (instant?) and does jeff want to do his green bean casserole or be part of the mashed potatoes or the gravy.....whatever any one wants to do let us know and we will get the ingredients for their project....

the main meal of the day would be out while we r doing an outing.........dinner would be a free for all..........any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated......

From Jenny:
perhaps we could plan for 1 outing and 1 inning for each day. and then add an extra activity as time, energy and motivation permits.

For example:
student ice cream + dome building (plus rec center swimming)
botanical garden hike + bagel making
zoo + coin games
bigger hiking + ice cream ball

or we could write each activity on a note card, categorize them as "inning", "outing", "big outing" (put a symbol in the top corner to indicate), tape them to a board and then arrange them for each day. we could also weight them for '5 - must do' or '1 - if time permits' (put a different ranking in the other corner).

then we can have a family meeting each evening to figure out the night before what we want to do the next day. posting the cards also allows everyone to see and know what's coming so they can plan accordingly. (but no fair moving things around when no one is looking!!)

if you want to participate, you get yourself ready. if you want to sit out an activity, go hide.

and as far as food...i like the idea of breakfast on our own, since everyone gets up at different times. that will keep it simple. we can make a note card for the one cream chip beef morning and put it on "the board"!! oh, and make a note card for the turkey dinner too! :) then we'll have to plan for an ACTIVE activity (ie. hiking) for that day!

yes, put us down for potatoes and green bean casserole. i don't mind doing real potatoes (and maybe instant as a backup). if you want to buy supplies ahead of time, let me know and we'll let you know what we need, or jeff and i can go to the store while we're there.

regarding lunches/dinners -- again that can be planned based on the day's activities. more note cards for the restaurants that we want to make sure we hit!!

From Jessica:
I am definitely all for agile-ly programming our family get together. I too love note cards, though my devotion has been inspired through EFL teaching rather than computer science. Nothing like shifting cut up pieces of paper around to get a group going. And in fact, there is precedence within the Horn family generally - you might remember that we've done this at least once before that's been recorded for posterity (admittedly on a much smaller scale):

Do we need to start writing the note cards before we get there? Can the Clemson folks get a board together before everyone arrives?

OMG! Notecards and family meetings! This is going to be even better than I anticipated!!!! (I can hear Tony groaning in Louisville right now!)

Another activity we need to add is a singalong/playalong. I don't think anyone will object if we invite John's BFF James. He just got a new guitar for his birthday, so he is itching for a gig.

More information:
Avenue Q only shows on Thursday (before Jessica and Mark are here) and Friday nights. There are still tickets available for Friday night.

Greenville Children's Museum
(50-minute drive)
M-Sa-9am-5pm
Sun 1-5

'55 Exchange (the University ice cream store) hours:
M-F 11:30am-6pm
S-S: 1-6pm

Corn Maze: will probably have to be on Sunday if we go: Sat 10am-6pm; Sun 1-6pm
(We are in small town, Bible Belt America here, nothing except Target and Walmart is open on Sunday mornings)
I vote for the Corn Maze if the weather is good. It's very kid friendly. Corn boxes (like sand boxes) to play in; tractor rides (on the trailer behind), pumpkin field, goats, a "cow train" Probably a 2 hour event, and it's only about a 15-minute drive.

Is Naomi napping in the afternoon?

Oh, also... John has a cardiologist appointment on Tuesday morning at 8:30am in Anderson. We will probably leave by 8am if anyone is interested. It's interesting to me, but probably not anyone else that early in the morning.

John has school from 9am-2pm each day, but I'm totally willing to keep him home as activities merit.

Tony will be in tech rehearsals on Tuesday evening (and Wednesday, but that doesn't really affect anyone but me and John!) He also works about 8 or 9 to five M-W, and can't get out of that... although we might be able to meet him at '55 Exchange one of those days for some post-lunch ice cream.

So many variables, so exciting!!!

jessica congratulations on the company director event.....we have our spies.....

julie and i have started on the post it notes for activities and food.....wow look at us all go...you would think we have teachers, engineers, and stage directors and project leaders in the family :)

as we get things done we will report in to our progress....

i think that is all for now.....mimi

now if we could come up with a quick program so that we could have virtual post-its...then we could see them online and ALL help move them around! :)

and btw, that's exactly what jeff said: "why all the planning now? you're just gonna change it later."
he just doesn't get it... ;)

and yes, naomi does still nap (usually for 2-3 hours in the afternoon, usually down by 1-ish) but that's gonna put a huge damper on the activities so we might just have to let her skip a nap or two! although, actually, she usually doesn't nap when she's around mimi and pa, so maybe it won't be an issue afterall. i think she gets infected with mom's "no sleep required" condition. :)

congrats to jeff....he has cleared things up for me...our group just likes to plan...that is the fun = doing the activity is just a bonus...we r just doing virtual activity in the planning....the expectation is the fun part...the sctivity just takes too much energy...wow a light blub moment...

jessica can u delete my duplicate comment above and edit this one for spelling errors

thanks...

hope to talk to u soon....mom

I've deleted the duplicate comment, but I'm afraid I can't alter your post to fix typos. It's ok, don't worry, it's just a blog comment - it doesn't fall in to the category of written communication that Julie and I were discussing on Jenny's blog.

:)

I wish there was a way for us to participate remotely - I'm starting to get a little worried that all the post-its will be written by the time I get there...

This is just way too much fun to miss getting in on all your plans. The Smith clan is way structured into "traditions" and you guys beat us all over in the "details". Sounds like a great time and know that you will all enjoy your time together. Take care and keep the plans coming!!! Maureen

Oh, there are written down already. Mom is planning to send a picture... or I can put it on my blog...
It took her three ties to get the "Fakesgiving" post-it written correctly! ;)

jessica v. said...

Ooops, sorry about that. But you can imagine I was a bit proud of myself for coming up with Fakesgiving - not that I'm the first, I'm sure...

And welcome to Maureen, who I think is getting her first real glimpse of the Horn clan's standard operating procedure!

(By the way, Maureen, sorry I have the comments moderated - I had a not very nice person post a link to a porn site in a comment on this blog a little while ago so I put some extra controls in then...!)

I think the schedule is starting to dictate itself, so maybe we need another post showing how it's coming out:
Friday: Avenue Q

Saturday: Jessica and Julie to ATL for brunch with Christine and IKEA returns; p/u Smiths at airport

Sunday: something in morning, maybe the Clemson Boys singalong (this needs to be on Sun or Mon); Corn maze in afternoon; Cracker Barrel Fakesgiving

Monday: something in morning/day; Clemson singalong in afternoon; Carolina/Dallas game after bedtime

Tuesday: ?

Wednesday: ? and departure

Wow, we really aren't together for all that long!

I just realized that not the whole list of activities to consider was showing, so now you can see the full list.

I'm a bit concerned that student ice cream isn't on your potential proposed schedule...

Juliet said...

I just hadn't decided which "?" it should replace...
No fears, it will happen.

Today I brought up the idea that Mark and Pa should start practicing some favorite toddler songs for the singalong. No pressure on performance, I just wanted to have us be able to all sing and play together on at least a couple numbers.

Some ideas:
"5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed."
"Itsy Bitsy Spider."

Are there any Mark knows already?
I will check with Kerri for James favorites.
Good ones would be those with lots of verses to the same tune... Maybe "There Was an old woman who swallowed a fly"? I doubt the kids know it yet, but it might be fun if they could learn it.

Ok, Jessica. I know you are in denial, but Hornucopia is over. You need to move on.
You need to make a NEW POST!!!
:p
